The Best Trail-Running Sneakers

There’s nothing like a trail run during the brisk winter season to make you feel alive and energized. Your heart is pumping; your leg muscles are working; the sights and sounds of nature fill your senses. For me, it beats running on concrete any day. But if you wear the wrong shoes, you’ll soon wail, like wildlife that just got run over.

Trail-running shoes are not the same as regular running sneakers. These shoes sport special lugs on the sole that come in different patterns, which keeps the shoe from getting caked with mud and debris. They also tend to be a little heavier than regular running sneakers to give your feet and ankles additional support. Experts say it’s best to buy a half-size larger than what you would purchase for a standard sneaker. Wear the socks you’d normally run in, since thickness can impact the fit, and wait to try them on toward the end of the day because your feet tend to swell. That way, you’ll be covered if your run changes from 6 AM to 6 PM. Here, I’ve picked my top three kicks and whose feet they’re best for. Happy trails!

Best for: Gritty, gutsy trail-blazers
Asics Women’s Athletic Shoe Gel Trail Lahar: This shoe is for the hard-core runner who isn’t afraid to get dirty. It has a trail-specific outsole, rear-foot gel cushioning, and they’re waterproof. I especially like the high-abrasion rubber that provides outstanding durability. Click here to buy it!

Best for: Rocky roadsters
New Balance Men’s Athletic 481 Trail Running Shoe: Equipped with a lightweight design and flexible rugged sole, this shoe is perfect for mountainous, muddy trails. The wide width ensures that there’s no pinch on your arches, while the synthetic, mesh upper lets air in to keep your toes cool. Click here to buy it!

Best for: All-terrain runners
New Balance Women’s 411 Trail Running Shoe: This all-terrain shoe sports an aggressive tread pattern you can rely on, whether you’re trudging on a slippery ramp or a slushy slope. Shock-absorbing insoles make every step comfortable, and the reinforced toe makes sure these kicks can take a beating. Click here to buy it!
