Science and stereotypes remind us that men are often faster and stronger than women. However, female biology trumps male DNA in some sports, particularly where critical thinking is involved (sorry, guys!). In tribute to Women’s History Month, we celebrate the sports where females have left their mark and left guys in the dust.

Equestrian
Professional horseback riding has historically been a female-dominated sport because it’s a test of strategy and handling, rather than strength.

Equestrian is a little pricy to get into, but it’s incredibly rewarding and great for your body. Check out this book to get started.

Taekwondo
Since girls rock at multitasking and tend to be flexible and detail-oriented, they excel at martial arts. Additionally, women were born knowing how to kick ass.

Karate, taekwondo, and other forms of martial arts and self-defense are generally inexpensive and a fantastic workout. Use our Find a Trainer feature to find classes near you.

Running
The fastest runner in the world is still Usain Bolt, but women are closing the gap in both long and short distances. Florence Griffith-Joyner’s (a.k.a. Flo-Jo) record in the 100m is 10.49, less than a second behind Bolt’s 9.58.

Running is so easy and inexpensive, and a perfect excuse to drop the housework and get some fresh air! Don’t forget to connect your FitBit or MapMyRun app to FitStudio, and earn points for your miles.

Swimming
Okay, so maybe men usually beat us in the water. But synchronized swimming is a women-only sport in the Olympics. And it’s been reported that men drown three times more than women?
